Snowpack, Livestock, and Land Grant Colleges Live From the Captitol

Water, fire, food, education; those are the basic themes of Tuesday’s Access Utah when we’ll broadcast from the Federal Building in Salt Lake City at the Utah celebration of the 150th anniversary of the U. S. Department of Agriculture.

We’ll talk about the effects of a nearly non-existent snowpack with Randy Julander, Snow Survey Manager with the Natural Resources Conservation Service; forecast the fire season with Forest Service spokesperson Kathy Jo Pollock; and talk rural development and agriculture with Dave Conine, state director of Rural Development, and Mark Gibbons, Lewiston farmer and President of the Utah Dairymen’s Association.

In the State of Mental Breakdown, Pt. 1

Today on Science Questions, we begin a two-part series titled, "In the state of Mental Breakdown" discussing the overhaul of the Valley Mental Health system.

Valley mental health has been the major, and almost only mental health provider across the Wasatch Front for the past two decades, and is now under a revamp. Sheri Quinn and Suzi Montgomery talk to doctors and patients to find out how this affects the care given to those who need it.

Nuclear Power on Friday's AU

Today on Access Utah, Sheri Quinn speaks to film makers Don Argott and Sheena Joyce about their movie, The Atomic States of America. The film takes a look at the impact of nuclear power on the lives of every-day Americans, from well-known incidents like Love Canal to the present-day concerns, like the Blue Castle Power Plant in Southern Utah.

Utah Poetry Out Loud Winner Goes on to National Competition

What began as an interest in poetry in her accelerated English class at Logan High School has evolved for Markaye Hassan into a love not only for poetry, but for the poets themselves.

Her passion is evident when she talks about the process of falling in love with poetry during the course of her class: "We spent a lot of time annotating poems where we would go through and really notice how every single word is so important and all of the different ways you could really apply it to yourself. It is so deep. Every word is so important."

New Collection at Zion Museum Chronicles the CCC

A new museum collection at Zion National Park chronicles the contributions of the men of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Pictures, writings, and special objects in the collection provide opportunities for visitors to gain first-hand knowledge of the work and lives of the men of the CCC.

During their 9 years working in Zion, they built and improved many of the park's trails, created parking areas, fought fires, eradicated invasive plants, help build campgrounds, built park buildings, and reduced flooding on the Virgin River.
