14-Year-Old Smithfield Shooting Victim Moved To Neuro Trauma Unit

The family of a 14-year-old girl who police say was shot in the head and left in a ditch released a statement Tuesday saying Deserae Turner has been moved to a Neuro Trauma Unit.

Cache County employee Jill Parker sent out the update for the Turner family, asking for community members to continue praying for her, the family and other families associated with the tragedy.

Two 16-year-old boys have been charged with aggravated murder, robbery and other counts.

Authorities say they lured Deserae to the ditch in the Northern Utah town of Smithfield by promising to sell her a knife.

Turner was in a medically induced coma for several days. Parker says she is making progress since the February 16 shooting, but will be undergoing at least one more surgery and extensive rehabilitation.

The Associated Press is not naming the boys because they are juveniles.

At 14-years-old, Kerry began working as a reporter for KVEL “The Hot One” in Vernal, Utah. Her radio news interests led her to Logan where she became news director for KBLQ while attending Utah State University. She graduated USU with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and spent the next few years working for Utah Public Radio. Leaving UPR in 1993 she spent the next 14 years as the full time mother of four boys before returning in 2007. Kerry and her husband Boyd reside in Nibley.
