SUU Plants Trees To Honor Cedar City, Gerald Sherratt

Wednesday, Southern Utah University observed Autumn Arbor Day, and in doing so, recognized the city’s namesake tree, and honors a former university president, who recently passed away.

Pioneer settlers named Cedar City after what were actually juniper trees, abundant in the area, but of an entirely different plant family.

“President Sherratt brought up the fact that Cedar City has actually no cedar trees - no true cedar trees,” said Eddie James Crew, a SUU student member of the campus tree board.

With the July passing of Sherratt, SUU has planted two large Cedar of Lebenon trees in recognition of the university’s host city as well as to honor the memory of the former SUU president.
