Rural Utahns More Likely To Be Uninsured, According To Study

Twenty percent of low-income Utahns living in metro areas don’t have health insurance and in rural areas, 31 percent of adults are uninsured, according to a report released this week. The findings show that this disparity is the third largest in the nation and cites Medicaid expansion as the most effective way to close the gap.

There are two possibilities for expanding Medicaid in Utah. A House bill that has been signed by Governor Gary Herbert, and a ballot initiative called Proposition 3.

In November, Utahns will vote on an initiative to expand Medicaid. A recent town hall in Logan featured lawmakers who tried to explain the difference between Proposition 3 and a Medicaid expansion bill signed by Governor Gary Herbert.

The federal government announced Monday that opioid treatment centers in Utah will receive additional Medicaid reimbursement money. The money will be used to house more clients seeking drug treatment help.

Utah Decides Healthcare is an initiative that hopes to extend Medicaid healthcare coverage to single adults without children and families that have annual income between $20,000 and $26,900.

Utah has asked President Donald Trump's administration to approve a limited Medicaid plan to help the homeless and those in need of mental health and drug addiction treatment.

It's part of a state strategy to curb violence and drug trafficking in a Salt Lake City neighborhood near an overcrowded homeless shelter.

Utah ranks in the top 10 nationally for child well-being, and has made improvements across almost all key measures, according to the 2017 Kids Count Data Book by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The percentage of children living in poverty remained unchanged at 13 percent from 2014 to 2015.

The Trump Administration released its proposal to balance the country’s budget over the next decade on Tuesday – and said it will require large cuts to domestic programs to do that. More than $800 billion would be slashed from Medicaid by 2027.

Rural hospital closures are on the rise in the U.S. Utah is in better standing than the rest of the country, but since it has a large rural population, this trend raises a flag of caution.
