Some Western governors say a new Trump administration directive threatens to undermine a hard-won compromise aimed at saving a beleaguered bird scattered across their region.

The directive, issued in late July, severely limits a type of land swap involving federal property. Critics say that eliminates an important tool for saving habitat for the shrinking population of greater sage grouse.

The Interior Department is expected to announce its decision soon on the fate of the sage grouse conservation plan, which spans Utah and 10 other western states.

State biologists have come up with a unique way to help local sage grouse populations.

The Department of Interior announced a proposal in May to convert mining claims to protect the sage grouse population in the West. Already there are 165 million acres of sage grouse habitat set aside nationwide. The latest proposal would set aside an additional 10 million acres.

Meteorologists are calling this winter the warmest on record. While this might be good news to picnickers and hikers, officials are saying the pleasant weather could have some unpleasant effects on the environment.
