About 123 people die of suicide every day in the U.S. It’s the 10th-leading cause of death for Americans and the No. 2 killer of teens.  According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some 45,000 Americans died by suicide in 2016 and the vast majority of states saw increases in the rates of suicide between 1999 and 2016. Suicide is the leading cause of death in Utah for youths ages 10 to 17. The state’s suicide rate for all ages is more than 60 percent above the national average. Recent celebrity deaths have also shone a spotlight on the problem.

  Utah officials say 23 children died over the last year after state child-welfare authorities became involved in their cases, marking a slight increase over the year before.

A report released Wednesday shows four of the deaths between July 2017 and June 2018 were homicides. The others were suicides, accidents or from natural causes.

Utah suicide prevention researcher Michael Staley says suicide isn't easily explained, and a community forum won't end suicide or suicidal behavior. But he calls it a start.

A Thursday evening meeting in Herriman drew about 400 couples, families with teens, school administrators, pastors and counselors.

Gov. Gary Herbert is creating a task force that includes a high-ranking Mormon leader, the Utah Jazz owner and the leader of an LGBT rights group to address a troubling increase in teen suicides in Utah.Herbert unveiled the coalition Wednesday and called on the members to coordinate with suicide prevention groups to create a list of recommendations to give to him by Feb. 15.

A Utah man accused of encouraging a high school friend to hang herself and filming the act has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge.

Court records show 18-year-old Tyerell Przybycien (pro-BISH-ian) entered the plea Tuesday.
