School districts would be able to allow 16- and 17 year-old students to vote in school board elections if H.B. 338 passed the Utah State Legislature.
In a joint commentary written for the Salt Lake Tribune by Salt Lake City Councilmember Chris Wharton and bill sponsor Rep. Todd Weiler, the proponents argue that allowing these students to vote in board elections is a perfect example of ensuring they can participate in the form of government that impacts them the most.
If passed, the bill would not require districts to allow 16- and 17 year-olds to vote in these elections, but officials would have an avenue to provide this option if they chose.
