On Tuesday, Governor Gary Herbert announced Utah restaurants, bars, and other food service establishments would need to close their dine-in options by Wednesday evening. Local restaurants are concerned this will have detrimental effects on both their employees and their overall business.
“We do have drive-through, pick-up and delivery options,” said Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox. “We want to encourage people to use those. We want to keep our restaurants in business. If your local restaurant does not have that option, please buy a gift card or gift certificate that gives them money now, and allows you to eat later on.”
Since dine-in options across the state are going away, many Cache Valley food service establishments are working together to find the best ways to support their employees and their customers.
Justin Hamilton, the owner of a few local restaurants and Off-Premise catering, says he and other restaurant owners are collaborating together to use catering vans for free food delivery anywhere in Cache Valley.
“That means we're able to use our catering employees, we're able to use servers, other people that normally now don't have a way to make an income, by delivering, people can tip them,” Hamilton said. “They can take care of this service staff that really needs this support during this downturn.”
Hamilton said if other businesses want to participate they are happy to include them in the delivery service. He said as of right now, they don’t have order minimums and want to work with community members to ensure everyone has the food they need.
