Gov. Lifts Alcohol Curfew

Gov. Gary Herbert lifted the state alcohol curfew during his last monthly press conference as governor.

“We obviously want to make sure that our restaurants and bars are safe places for people to go. But we want to make sure that our business community has every opportunity to not only survive, but to thrive," he said.

Gov. Herbert lifted the state alcohol curfew at the Thursday press conference. The change will be implemented starting Friday, and will allow establishments to go back to normal hours.

Earlier this month, Gov. Herbert placed a curfew on establishments to stop selling booze by 10 p.m. Following the lift of the ban, these establishments will need to adhere to a new requirement by having patrons remain stationary while inside.

“You cannot just have a glass in your hand and walk throughout the facility there," he said. "That would increase risk. If you’re going to drink and eat you have to be stationary while you do it.”

Following the monthly press conference, the governor was joined by public health officials to provide a COVID-19 update.

There were 3,203 cases and 30 deaths on Thursday, but a lower rolling seven day average than the week prior.

Gov. Herbert said he is optimistic in Utah’s capabilities to halt the virus, and Utah residents should look forward to the new year.

“It’s been a great honor for me to serve the great people of Utah for these last 11 and a half years as governor," he said.

Gov.- elect Spencer Cox will be taking office in January.
