A Utah family says in a lawsuit that a child lost two fingers in a faulty grocery store escalator.

The lawsuit filed Monday says the girl's mother was at a register buying her groceries at Smith's Marketplace when she heard a scream.

She ran around the check-out stand and found her daughter covered in blood, her fingers stuck in the escalator. She was rushed to a hospital but her amputated fingers couldn't be re-attached.

The suit claims the escalator did not stop until an employee rushed over to manually stop it.

It says it was missing components, and the store's permit to operate it had expired two weeks before the finger amputation in September 2017.

A spokeswoman for the store did not immediately return an email seeking comment.
