Salt Lake County prosecutors have filed criminal charges against the owner and former workers at a funeral home that was fined $10,000 last year for misconduct, including allegations the mortuary mixed ashes, stole jewelry from bodies and left bodies unrefrigerated.
The Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing suspended the Carver Mortuary's license in November but allowed it to remain open on probation after it agreed to pay the fine.
The owner, 34-year-old Tanner Carver of Spanish Fork, was charged Wednesday with seven counts of unlawful or unprofessional conduct and 10 counts of unlawfully preparing a body without a license.
Two former employees told state regulators last year that taking jewelry, watches and rings from bodies was a common practice.
Eric Benson, a lawyer representing the funeral home, didn't immediately return a message seeking comment on Thursday.
