Overview
Oversees news production and content for Utah Public Radio news team. Hires, trains, and supervises staff reporters, producers, and student interns. Takes lead role in assigning coverage for new stories; and covers and prepares news stories for broadcast. Manages website, UPR app, and social media accounts. Occasionally serves as a Special Projects Manager, overseeing the production of content, project budget, and marketing. This position reports directly to the UPR station managers.
Responsibilities
- Directs the monitoring and production of daily news and makes assignments to UPR reporters.
- Serves as primary editor to insure news reports are produced in an effective, timely, and responsible manner. Hires, trains and supervises staff reporters, student interns, and regional reporters.
- Takes lead role in writing and producing own news content.
- Coordinates with USU JCOM and UPR for possible course in radio journalism and production.
- Serves as fill-in host, as needed.
- Prepares and publishes stories from UPR news team on UPR website and app.
- Maintains website with local and national news, UPR events, programs, and advertising.
- Manages UPR social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.
- Markets and promotes UPR content, including special projects, series, and events.
- Tracks and reports web and app analytics.
- Acts as Special Projects Manager overseeing content production from start to finish, coordination with staff and entities involved, scheduling of air time, marketing and promotion.
- Participates in the development and management of annual operating budgets.
- Ensures compliance with university policies and federal, state, and local regulations governing news coverage.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- A four-year degree in journalism or equivalent field of study
- Minimum two years full-time professional experience in journalism — preferably in a multi-platform news environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with strong interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of on-air and online techniques/procedures, protocols, and standards.
- Must have experience in broadcast production, web content, news writing, and editing.
- Ability to develop and deliver news reports and programs on-air and online.
- Ability to make broadcast programming decisions within defined parameters.
- Must have excellent memory for details, be able to meet daily deadlines under potentially stressful conditions, and deal effectively with multiple competing tasks.
- Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
- Knowledge of laws, regulations, conventions, and protocols relating to the delivery of news and public affairs content.
- Knowledge of editorial and ethical standards for the research and development of journalistic articles and/or presentations.
- Ability to keep up to date on social media trends and implement on UPR’s social media platforms.
- Ability to work with a team of university students and the flexibility that entails.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Preferred skills include on-line research, multimedia production, word and spreadsheet processing and operation of light office equipment
- Familiarity with public media news programming standards and values
- Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and inventory control
- Successful candidate will possess broad knowledge of local and regional issues
- Knowledge of budget preparation, cost estimating, monitoring, and fiscal management principles and procedures
- Ability to work in Adobe Audition
