Position Summary: The Assistant News Director/Online Managing Editor is responsible for the overall creation of accurate on-air and digital news and information content on multiple platforms. This position will work with the General Manager and News Director to create, write and publish content, is responsible to ensure web and radio content meets Associated Press and legal Federal Communication Commission reporting standards with the authority to determine the delivery of content to platforms outside of UPR. Supervises UPR news staff interns, independent news providers, and other parties to select content for digital and on-air distribution. Reports to the General Manager and News Director. This is full-time EEO position.
1. Creating, Approving, Editing Content for Radio and Web: 60%. Works in association with the News Director to create news story ideas, educate public and reporters about current issues and events, approve reporter assignments, schedule stories for radio and website news, and delegate time for interviewing, writing and editing. Reviews and approves facts and script content to insure news reports are produced in an accurate, timely and responsible manner. Work with the General Manager on the design and creation of special digital projects.
2. Reporting 25%: Manages the evening news team and creates stories on a regular basis. May be called upon to research and review content for and host talk programs, appear as a program guest, and produce various spots, features, special programs as assigned.
3. Substituting for News Director and Other Duties: 15%. Performs the primary functions of the News Director during the director’s absence and may include personnel management, budget management, editorial management, and other duties as assigned. May operate audio console and substitute as radio host. Also maintains records, conducts correspondence and meetings, oversees upkeep of supplies and equipment, helps on station fundraising activities and other duties as assigned.
4. Adheres to deadlines and, in concert with appropriate staff, makes timely and effective decisions in situations requiring prompt attention. S/He works in close concert with and under the supervision of the News Director, assisting in identifying, developing, and creating programs for broadcast both locally and nationally.
5. Help to facilitate training to ensure UPR staff have a thorough understanding of the changing requirements for compelling online content.
6. Maintain open communications with UPR staff and foster a collaborative environment to benefit both the online and on-air products.
7. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Three years’ experience working in a news room and online environment including writing for the radio and web.
2. Three years’ experience as a journalist with heavy emphasis on editorial development.
3. Bachelor’s Degree.
4. Finalist candidates must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background checks.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Experience in public broadcasting.
2. Major work in English, journalism, arts, humanities or digital media.
3. Experience with content management systems, social networking and content distribution.
4. Experience in a mobile environment.
