In an effort to offer Uthan’s enhanced privacy and convenience, the Utah Department of Public Safety’s Driver License Division is launching a mobile driver’s license and identification card pilot program. According to a news release, the program is ready to begin with approximately 100 select participants and will expand to 10,000 participants later in the year.
In addition to the convenience of adding identification to a mobile phone, Department of Public Safety Commissioner Jess L. Anderson said Utahn’s privacy, security and personal control are their main priorities. She said the mobile driver’s license gives you control over your own data. And, whenever identification is requested, “you control what information to share.”
The move toward mobile identification comes after the 2019 legislative session where lawmakers tasked the Driver’s License Division with studying costs, processes and necessary vendors, according to KSL.
