'Shots Fired': police and deadly force on Tuesday's Access Utah

With police shootings in Utah reaching record highs amid a nationwide debate over police accountability,FRONTLINE andThe Salt Lake Tribune are presentingShots Fired: the first nationally broadcast documentary stemming from FRONTLINE’sLocal Journalism Initiative.

Shots Fired, which premiered on PBS, examines police training, tactics, and accountability, as well as racial disparities in the way force is used and looks at the circumstances surrounding several tragic police shootings in Utah, and the laws governing use of force in the state.

Next time on Access Utah we’ll talk with the film’s producer, award-winning filmmaker Abby Ellis(Flint's Deadly Water). We’ll also hear sound clips from the film.

Tom Williams worked as a part-time UPR announcer for a few years and joined Utah Public Radio full-time in 1996. He is a proud graduate of Uintah High School in Vernal and Utah State University (B. A. in Liberal Arts and Master of Business Administration.) He grew up in a family that regularly discussed everything from opera to religion to politics. He is interested in just about everything and loves to engage people in conversation, so you could say he has found the perfect job as host “Access Utah.” He and his wife Becky, live in Logan.
