A Utah advocacy group is praising Utah’s governor and lawmakers for approving plans for Utah schools to expand a federal school breakfast program.

Utah Governor Gary Herbert signed a bill this week that was passed by lawmakers during the 2020 Utah Legislative Session. The Start Smart Utah breakfast program increases funding for school breakfast programs in hundreds of Utah schools according to Neil Rickard, Child Nutrition Advocate for Utahns Against Hunger.

Capacity Issue Burgeoning In Utah Foster Care

The disparity between Utah's foster families and foster children is in the hundreds to thousands.  Currently, there are 2,700 children in the foster system, but only ever around 1,400 households available to house them. One of the biggest issues with recruitment is finding volunteers willing and qualified to go through the training.

In its 17th Annual How-Do-You-Measure-Up Report, which sets eight policy benchmarks for state legislatures to meet and ranks them on how they do, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network says Utah only succeeded in meeting one benchmark while many others placed firmly in the red.

Utah ranks in the top 10 nationally for child well-being, and has made improvements across almost all key measures, according to the 2017 Kids Count Data Book by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The percentage of children living in poverty remained unchanged at 13 percent from 2014 to 2015.
