Despite calls for increasing diversity, scientific researchers are still predominantly white. One of the main reasons: a substantial disparity in research funding between black and white researchers. This can affect scientists' careers in important ways. We'll dig into a new report by the National Institutes of Health, which promises to address structural racism within the scientific community, and we'll talk to a scientist who's fighting for change.

As part of the seventh Utah State University Native American Summer Mentorship program last week, a cultural competency course for faculty was offered to help students receive the support they need on a long-term basis.

The group Utah Women & Leadership Project, based out of Utah Valley University, publishes studies on how Utah women and girls are doing in academics, politics and workplaces. Recently they did a follow up on a 2013 study called Utah Women in STEM on how Utah women are doing in STEM fields, namely how many are graduating with certificates in those areas and how many express interests in them.

Last week, Utah State University received a million-dollar grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to create the new Mentoring and Encouraging Student Academic Success program to better support Native American students transferring to USU Logan from the USU Blanding campus.
