The recent United States Census means it’s time for redistricting in Utah. Congressional, state and school board maps are being redrawn to better reflect the changing population. It’s a process that Utah State political science professor Michael Petersen said is very important.

The Food and Drug Administration has unanimously endorsed Johnson and Johnson’s COVIDvaccine booster shot for everyone 18 and older. These boosters are recommended to all Americans who received the first dose at least two months ago.

Utah reports 17 new COVID-19 deaths today and 1,493 total cases. 559 are hospitalized in Utah with COVID-19. The rolling seven-day average of cases per day has increased to 1,288, and the unvaccinated continue to be at higher risk for contracting and being hospitalized with COVID-19.


Some people in Utah are still feeling the effects of radiation exposure from above ground nuclear testing in Nevada during the cold war. The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act, or RECA, was put in place to address these problems created by the government.

The Intermountain Power Agency in Millard County is replacing its coal run generators with a natural gas and hydrogen power plant. As planning continues, the Utah Foundation released the “Plugging into the Future of Electricity” report. This report details how the switch came as California, where IPA exports its power, decided to no longer accept coal energy.

Utah ranks as one of the worst states for pilots dealing with laser strikes.  The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that through the month of September, Utah ranked number eight with 203 laser strikes all occurring over Salt Lake City.

Utah reported 1,637 new cases of Covid-19 and 11 deaths Friday. The seven-day average for positive tests was at 1,424 per day. 572 people in Utah are hospitalized with Covid-19. Hospital ICU beds are almost at 100% capacity facing all of these hospitalizations.

The year 2020 is marked by the COVID pandemic. While many things shut down, art continued to thrive in Utah cities.

Utah confirmed 1,749 COVID-19 cases on Friday, and one doctor at Intermountain Healthcare said that Utah leaders fear the state will reach “crisis standards of care.” Dr. Todd Vento said hospitals are overwhelmed and there aren’t enough staff to keep up.


Miranda Baker, a TikTok user, has claimed in a series of videos to have picked up Brian Laundrie, boyfriend of missing woman Gabby Petito, while he was hiking in Grand Teton National Park.

The Food and Drug Administration has voted to reject a plan to approve the Pfizer COVID-19 booster shots. The panel voted 16-2, with most members frustrated at the lack of evidence Pfizer provided to show the safety of the booster. 


This week, Catholic Community Services launched the St. Vincent’s Kitchen Academy - a new program that provides individuals who are homeless and unemployed culinary training. After completing the course, staff will help place them into jobs. They will also receive assistance with housing, transportation and clothing.

Even rain couldn’t stop volunteers from coming to Pack It Out Utah, a statewide effort to clean up as much trash as possible. This event will last through September 19th and includes any effort people make to pick up trash along trails, streets, or just by their homes.

Thirteen Intermountain Healthcare hospitals are suspending all non-urgent surgeries and procedures requiring hospital admission. This policy will take effect on September 15th and will last several weeks.

Cache County planners are in the final stages of updating the General Plan, and they are asking citizens for their input on what they want to see happen in the valley in the next twenty years.

Yu Huang, an assistant professor in biological engineering at Utah State University, and his team received a $1.8 million grant to conduct research that will potentially answer questions that have been asked in the biological engineering field for decades. They were the only researchers in Utah awarded the Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award in 2021.

Small class sizes, an aviation program, and easy access to Utah’s National Parks are a few of the things that attract students to Southern Utah University. These are also some of the characteristics of the school that will be highlighted in a new TV series called “The College Tour.”

September is Suicide Awareness Month. At the USU Extension Office in Cache County, Alisha Straatman and Tom Keady are two individuals working to provide suicide prevention resources to people throughout Utah.
