New Bill Would Help Save Bighorn Sheep, Golden Eagles

A bill just introduced in the U.S, Senate would help thousands of species stay off the Endangered Species List - including bighorn sheep, golden eagles and the Lahontan cutthroat trout in Nevada. 

Each year, USU 4-H Extension hosts a mock legislative session for high school students. In a condensed version of what takes Utah lawmakers 45 days, high school students visit Utah’s capitol hill and go through the entire legislative process in one day.

A committee of lawmakers in Utah's House of Representatives has signed off on the creation of a new legislative oversight committee that would have broad power to investigate state and local governments, ranging from the governor's office down to an individual school.

The proposal from Republican Rep. Keven Stratton of Orem was rejected earlier this month as some Republicans joined Democrats in opposing the measure citing worries that the committee would go too far in expanding the Legislature's power.

Utah Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz says he's becoming a Fox News Channel contributor to keep his voice in politics while starting a consulting firm and writing a book after he leaves Congress this week.

Chaffetz told The Associated Press Wednesday that he doesn't expect he'll be on Fox News every day but he'll have flexibility to weigh in on matters in Washington whether he's at home in Utah or traveling.

Shortly after his Facebook announcement in April revealing that he would not seek re-election in 2018, Rep. Jason Chaffetz told major news outlets that he may even step down early, prompting state leaders to consider a special election.
