With folks across the country struggling to afford meals, credit unions are stepping up to help people in need.


Reduced hours at work and job loss due to the pandemic mean food insecurity has increased throughout Utah. When it comes to making a donation to the Utah Food Bank, CEO Ginette Bott saids a dollar goes a lot further than you may expect. 

'Heroes Act' Could Help Feed Hungry Utahns

The newest COVID-19 relief bill, the “Heroes Act”, that just passed in the U.S. House of Representatives would — if passed by the U.S. Senate and signed into law by President Trump — provide low-income Utah families and individuals with nearly $45 million extra over the next 16 months to purchase groceries or food at farmers markets.

It's during November and December that the local food bank gets the majority of its donations for the year.

Many college students in Utah will be heading back to class later this month. Because of the traditional low-paying jobs held by college students, there is growing concern nationwide that students won’t have enough to eat with their limited financial resources.

According to the United States census, almost 15 percent of Utah senior citizens are facing hunger. With seniors making up 10 percent of Salt Lake County’s population, one program is providing fresh produce to fight hunger with over 3,800 pounds of fresh produce were distributed in 2017. All that fresh produce was enough to feed over 1,500 senior citizens.
