Delegates for state political party conventions will be chosen at neighborhood caucus meetings around the state amid a climate of bickering at the Utah Republican Party over the nomination system for candidates.

The meetings will be held Tuesday night. The current nomination process allows candidates to gather voter signatures to get on the primary election ballot as an alternative to the caucus/convention system.

A federal appeals court has ruled against Utah's Republican Party and upheld a state law overhauling how political parties nominate candidates.

The U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday said the 2014 law balances the state's interest in managing elections while allowing political parties and residents a way to express their political choices.

Former CIA Director John Brennan said in a Wednesday speech in Salt Lake City that the Senate intelligence committee that will vet nominee Gina Haspel should be fair but ensure Haspel did not inappropriately overstep her authority in the interrogation program.

A legislative panel has approved a bill that would allow Utah motorists to proceed through an intersection after coming to a full stop at a stubborn red light during times of low travel when no other vehicles are present.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Ken Ivory of West Jordan, denies the measure would give a green light to running red lights.
