When thousands of people were forced to flee their homes during a wildfire last month, their pets had to crowd into an animal hospital and some went missing.

As residents evacuated the cities of Woodland Hills and Elk Ridge, the staff at the Payson Family Pet Hospital housed nearly double their normal capacity of animals.

A judge has picked a new venue for the trial of a Utah man charged with accidentally starting a massive wildfire in southern Utah last year.

Court records show 62-year-old Robert Lyman will be tried in Provo after a judge decided he couldn't get a fair trial in a county torched by the blaze.

Idaho is scrutinizing its program allowing prison inmates to help battle wildfires after one was charged with raping a woman working at a remote base camp in Utah.

Idaho Department of Correction spokesman Jeff Ray says they've returned five crews to prison as they review which inmates are allowed to serve, the training they receive and how they are deployed.

Authorities say a suspected arsonist who set several wildfires along a Utah interstate may also be responsible for fires in Wyoming.

Investigator Jason Curry, of the Utah Forestry, Fire and State Lands, says six fires that started along Interstate 80 on Monday appear to be linked to blazes ignited along a Wyoming interstate on the same day.

For many residents in northern Utah, our characteristic mountains are shroud in a hazy smoke. The cold front that entered on Monday brought with it northwesterly and westerly winds carrying smoke from the many fires in the western United States.

  The Trump administration is pledging to work more closely with state and local officials to prevent wildfires and fight those choking California and other western states.

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue says officials are targeting wide swaths of land — including cutting down small trees and underbrush and setting controlled fires — to reduce the frequency and severity of fires now burning across the western United States.

Authorities in central Utah say a wildfire in Sanpete County has burned an estimated 1.5 square miles (4 sq. kilometers), destroyed at least two structures and forced the evacuation of approximately 350 people while threatening 150 homes.

It isn't yet known what caused the fire near Milburn, Fairview and Indianola to start Monday and there's no report on a containment percentage.

  A teenager has been charged in connection with the fire that burned eight homes in Moab last month.

The 16-year-old suspect was charged in Moab's 7th District Juvenile Court with reckless burning and causing a catastrophe.

Authorities rescued dozens of people trapped by flash floods and debris flows in the area of a wildfire burn scar in northern Utah.

The National Weather Service says heavy rains triggered flash flooding Sunday afternoon near The Pinnacles. Water is over the bridge at Strawberry River and Timber Canyon.

Wildfires are destroying millions of acres every year according to the National Centers for Environment Information. Many of these fires are human caused, but fuel like cheat grass causes fires to burn faster and hotter. Researchers in Utah are working to implement fire resistant plants into western landscapes to reduce the damage.

Wildlife officials are moving hundreds of local fish to a hatchery to rescue them from a southern Utah wildfire they worry could destroy a native fishery.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said sediment spewed by the fire could flush into a restored fishery for Bonneville cutthroat trout and make it uninhabitable for two years.

At least 74 homes have been destroyed and six more damaged in a Utah wildfire that forced more than 1,000 people from their homes.

The Duchesne County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday the fire in a mountain area near a popular fishing reservoir also damaged or destroyed 131 camp trailers and 158 sheds or agricultural buildings.

A Utah wildfire has ballooned closer to a popular fishing reservoir forcing authorities to shut down high tension power lines and order evacuations for a campground and subdivisions neighborhoods of cabins and homes.

The fire burning near Strawberry Reservoir was fueled Wednesday by high winds, heat and very dry conditions.

Most of the evacuations in effect Monday were due to a 78-square-mile (202-square-kilometer) wildfire in southern Colorado that authorities believe was human-caused.

The U.S. Forest Service said Tuesday the Trail Mountain fire northwest of Orangeville began as a prescribed burn but grew out of control last week.

Federal officials have launched a two-pronged plan to stop a vicious cycle of rangeland wildfires in a wide swath of sagebrush country in the West that supports cattle ranching, recreation and is home to an imperiled bird. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management on Friday says it will create an Environmental Impact Statement concerning fuel breaks and another on fuels reduction and restoration for Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, California, Utah, and Washington.

Authorities say two Utah wildfires are still burning south of Salt Lake City, but a favorable weather forecast should help firefighters get the upper hand.
