On Tuesday the Better Business Bureau in Utah called out the Cancer Fund of America for reportedly using little more than eight percent of donations for their intended purpose, keeping over $410,000 in contributions.
The organization, which also uses the name Breast Cancer Financial Assistance Fund, solicited money under the pretense that the financial aid would be used to purchase prostheses, bras and other products for women battling breast disease.
The BBB told media programs should receive 65 percent or more of donations and says this is not the fund’s first run in with the law.
The reported Salt Lake location of the fund is currently occupied by Feature Films for Families, which was hired by the fund to solicit donations, according to the BBB.
Media reports the Federal Trade Commission filed a case against Feature Films for Families and an associated fundraising company, Corporations for Character, in 2011 for allegedly making 16 million calls to numbers on the Do Not Call Registry and misrepresenting how solicited funds would be used.
The Cancer Fund of America is based in Knoxville, Tenn. and was recently named the Second Worst Charity in the United States by the Tampa Bay Times in Florida and the Center for Investigative Reporting. Calls to the Cancer Fund of America were not immediately returned.
