Utah Ranks 2nd In The Nation For Small Business Start-Up

Thumbtack, a professional project provider website, released a survey discussing small business friendliness.

The state of Utah ranked second in the nation as a great place to start a business. The report considered how easy it is for owners to start a small business and follow business regulations.

“We asked them to evaluate how supported they feel by their state and local governments. Then we asked them follow-up questions on the different public policies that effect their business," said Lucas Puente, economist for Thumbtack.

Whitney Olsen of Smithfield owns Ethos Babywearing, a Utah-based company that creates wraps, slings and carriers for infants.

“But as far as starting a small business, I think the biggest thing is identifying a market where there is a need for something, not just a want," she said. Olsen’s Utah-based bank helped her understand the state and federal laws that people must follow when starting a business.

Utah is the only state to have five straight A+ grades in the history of Thumbtack’s survey and is one of only three states to have received an A+ grade this year.

Utah achieved an A- grade for the efficiency of government websites. The lowest grade was a D- in business environment.
