Former Utah Attorney General John Swallow sues state.

A former Utah Attorney General who was acquitted of corruption charges last year is suing the state to reimburse him for his legal fees.

John Swallow filed a lawsuit Tuesday, seeking about $1.6 million in reimbursement from the state to pay for his defense.

Swallow was acquitted in March of nine criminal counts that included bribery, obstruction of justice and evidence tampering.

Swallow had sought reimbursement, citing a Utah law that requires the state to pay legal bills for defending public officials who are acquitted of criminal charges related to their jobs.

State attorneys refused, claiming the law doesn't apply if the official is acquitted when no longer working for the state.

The attorney general's office declined to comment on the lawsuit.
