As Utah continues to hold about a 4% growth rate of coronavirus cases, Monte Roberts, the director of Utah’s Department of Motor Vehicles, said up to six of the state's DMVs will be opened for appointment-only and drive-thru business starting on Friday.
He said all those who can update registration online should do so. Roberts saidthe changes will roll-out at the most highly used offices (Salt Lake, South Valley, Farmington, Ogden and Provo) first before expanding to throughout the rest of the state within the next few weeks.
Roberts also announced a plan to extend vehicle registration with a two-week leeway period — if approved by the governor — to help those who need more time to get their vehicles inspected. More information on the plan will be available pending the governor’s decision, though Roberts said he expects a release later today.
The executive director of the Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs said more than 50% of the services the department offers have occurred via Zoom meetings in the last month. According to a Veterans and Military Affairs survey, Gary Harter said 40% of working veterans reported a loss of hours or jobs due to the coronavirus, 30% have had increased mental illness and 11% reported needing additional assistance to pay bills.
Harter announced Hill Air Force Base is participating in a flyover event on Thursday, starting at 1 p.m., as a way to “salute” healthcare workers and frontline employees in Utah, following the I-15 corridor.
