The Great Salt Lake’s third-largest island, Fremont Island, was once the possible destination for thousands of new homes but will now be preserved in its natural state after being sold to an undisclosed nonprofit group.
The Deseret News reports the majority owner had initially contemplated a master-planned community with upward of 15,000 homes but several trips to the island that sentiment started to fade. The island has a distinct natural beauty and a rich history, having been visited by legendary 19th century explorers and the site Brigham Young chose to exile a grave robber.
