According to a new study by WalletHub, Utah is the sixth-least safe state during the COVID-19 pandemic. The five states that were rated below Utah were New York, West Virginia, New Jersey, Michigan and Georgia. The study found the safest states to be New Hampshire, Hawaii, Alaska, Kansas and Vermont.
WalletHub compared all 50 states and the District of Columbia by comparing five key metrics: vaccination rates, positive testing, hospitalizations, transmission rates and deaths. The weighted average across all states was calculated and resulting scores were used to rank-order the states.
The study also found that, generally, Democratic states were safer than Republican states.
