Utah Governor Spencer Cox is defending the Utah Jazz’s scholarship program — which gives a four-year scholarship to a minority student each time the team wins — saying it’s not racist against white students.According to a report from KUTV, Cox’s response comes after an earlier interview in which he was asked if he planned to do anything about the white children being excluded from the program. Cox said there was no need and that it makes sense to help kids in underrepresented communities because they don’t have the same opportunities as white children.
Cox tweeted in response to angry comments swarming on social media, saying “if you’re outraged by a private individual trying to help disadvantaged minority kids go to college, then I’m definitely not your guy.”
Cox said he’s proud of the team and added that “Ryan Smith and the Jazz can do whatever they want with their funds.”
