Utah Sees Strong Teacher Retention Despite Pandemic

According to a report from KUER, more Utah teachers stayed in their jobs this year than have over the past five years, despite concerns the COVID-19 pandemic would drive teachers away.Data from the Utah State Board of Education shows the retention rate between 2019-2020 and current school years was 93 percent. In previous years, retention rates were 90 to 91 percent.

According to the report, retention is usually correlated with how the economy is doing, which could be an explanation for the higher retention rates. People tend to stay in teaching positions during poor economic situations because it’s a more stable, benefited position.
