Utah Legislature Could Ban School Mask Mandates In Special Session

The Utah legislature is set to discuss whether to ban mask requirements in schools in a special session on Wednesday, according to Deseret News. Gov. Spencer Cox included the issue in his call for the special session issued Monday morning. This matter comes as some parents have given pushback because they’ve been upset about masks being required in K-12 schools after other statewide COVID-19 restrictions were lifted.

By including a possible ban on school mask mandates on the agenda for the special session, Cox is allowing the legislature to possibly add more permanence to future requirements in schools.

Senate President Stuart Adams said the aim of enacting a ban would be to “alleviate some of the contention around masks” because “fatality rates are plummeting” and “the vaccines seem to be working.”

The full agenda for the special session can be found on the governor’s website.
