Hikers rescued after getting lost in Little Cottonwood Canyon

United Police officials say two hikers, a 26-year-old man and 24-year-old woman, were rescued Saturday morning after getting lost Friday night in Little Cottonwood Canyon.Members of Salt Lake County Sheriff's Search and Rescue provided the update Sunday, saying the hikers were experienced, but quickly became disoriented in the dark on their descent of a popular hiking route called The Thumb.

The two hikers did not have headlamps or enough food, water or clothing for a night in the mountains. They called search and rescue just before midnight Friday and a Department of Public Safety helicopter was sent out, but it could not hoist due to weather conditions.

A team of rescuers found the hikers around 5 a.m. Officials say the hikers were found uninjured but borderline hypothermic. They were off the mountain around 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
