Bill to propose free menstrual products in school restrooms across Utah

The Period Project, a movement dedicated to putting free menstrual products in school restrooms across Utah, held a rally on Capitol Hill Wednesday morning as lawmakers were gathered for interim meetings.During the rally, Rep. Karianne Lisonbee (R-Clearfield) announced she would sponsor a bill to use public and private funding to put period productions in all high schools and junior high schools.

Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson told rally attendees that she’s “really happy we’re starting to get rid of the stigma around periods. It’s about dang time.”

Advocates say one in five girls can’t afford period products, and nearly seven in ten of them have missed school because of it.

Henderson says Gov. Spencer Cox supports the bill, which has not been publicly released yet. The general legislative session begins January 18.
