The family of Jovany Mercado of Ogden held a vigil recently to mark the one-year anniversary of when he was shot and killed by police outside his parents’ home.
Police say Mercado disregarded their commands to drop a knife in his hand as he walked toward them. Police had been called to the area on reports of a suspicious man with a knife walking in the neighborhood.His family has decried the level of force police used. Jovany was shot 16 times. About 60 people took part in the vigil. They held candles and watched a video montage of photos from Mercado’s life.
