A concurrent resolution encouraging k-12 schools in Utah to consider retiring Native American names and mascots failed in the Utah House on Tuesday, 27 to 45.
House Concurrent Resolution 3, which would not be binding if it had passed, urged schools to consider Native American mascots at their school, learn about indgenous history and then consider retiring those mascots. The bill would not apply to colleges and universities and schools would have not been under an obligation to change the mascots.
According to tweets from Ben Winslow of Fox 13, there seemed to be disagreement between representatives during the floor debate on whether or not Native Americans were alright with these names.
Rep. Rex Shipp, whose district includes Cedar High whose mascot the “Redmen” was recently retired, said there is still division in his community over the change and there are hopes the old mascot may be brought back.
