“Pioneers of the Oregon and California Trails” features activities for both children and adults. July 13 at 1 p.m., the American West Heritage Center will join the museum for a lecture highlighting the everyday experiences of settlers as they traveled across the West.
Throughout the day, children can play pioneer games, create their own yarn dolls, replicas of covered wagons and log cabins.
“Hundreds of thousands of people pushed west during the mid-1800s in pursuit of a dream, with many of them migrating through northern Utah,” said Candice Cravins, a museum assistant. “We hope to foster a better understanding and appreciation of the many triumphs — and struggles — of the pioneers as they traversed a vast landscape and laid the foundation for the many places we have come to know and love today.”
In addition to the “Saturdays at the Museum” activity series with its 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. hours, community members and USU students alike can visit the museum during its standard operating hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Funding for Saturday events is provided by a grant from the United States Institute of Museum and Library Services. More information about the IMLS is available online.
The USU Museum of Anthropology can be found on the USU Logan campus in the south turret of the historic Old Main building, Room 252. Admission is free. For Saturday activities, free parking is available in the adjacent lot, south of the building.
