Oil Painting: Beginning and Intermediate (Ages 12+)

Oil Painting: Beginning and Intermediate (Ages 12+)

The Visual Art Institute will hold a 12-week course in beginning and intermediate oil painting at the Highland Community Center on Thursdays beginning June 18th. Registration for the entire 12 weeks or for individual classes are open now.

This class will approach the first step of the painting (the block in) by working from black and white reference. We will then choose our own colors to match the block in values. Emphasis will be on low chroma and high chroma finishes, with discussion and demonstration of each. Beginners and Intermediate painters welcomed! Subject matters will include still life, landscapes, seascapes, portrait, and figurative. Shelley will discuss and demonstrate different art concepts weekly.

SUPPLY LIST:

1. 8 - 10 gessoed boards. You can buy masonite or canvas board. Stretched canvas will work, but it is often loose and bouncy. I prefer a more firm surface to paint on. 12 x16 is the recommended size.

2. Pint of gesso

TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM:

We try to make our classes as accessible to everyone as possible. We are able to offer a limited number of tuition assistance scholarships each term. You can complete an application on our website or call our office for assistance applying. Applications are available in Spanish and English.

MULTI-CLASS DISCOUNT:

When you register for more than one class, you can receive a discount up to 10% per class! You must call and register through the front office for this discount.

ADA ACCESSIBILITY & ACCOMMODATIONS:

Our classrooms are ADA accessible. Some courses may involve tasks or activities that may be difficult for individuals with limited strength, difficulty bending over, and sitting or standing for long periods of time. We are happy to work with students to find solutions to make their experience positive and doable. For example, wheel throwing takes arm strength and bending over the wheel. Students may work on hand-building projects instead of throwing. Please reach out to our office to discuss your needs.
