Second Teen Sentenced In Plot That Left Girl Shot In Head
A teenage boy convicted in a plot that left a 14-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to the head will serve at least 15 years and up to life in prison.
Jayzon Decker was sentenced Wednesday, a year after prosecutors said he encouraged a friend to kill the girl who was messaging one of them.
Victim Deserae Turner survived, but with injuries that leave her struggling to walk, read and function through debilitating pain.
Decker pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated murder and felony obstruction of justice.
The Deseret News reports his lawyer unsuccessfully pushed for a shorter sentence, pointing to his client's youth and otherwise clean record.
Judge Brian Cannell sided with prosecutors who said Decker was as responsible as his friend Colter D. Peterson, who fired the gun and got 15 years to life.
