A year after allegations of mismanagement, animal abuse and neglect, the St. George Animal Shelter is holding a re-opening celebration to showcase the changes that have been made to the facility.

The shelter is re-opening with a new director, Sgt. Ivor Fuller, and new facilities including kennels that give animals access to the outdoors and dog runs.

Fuller said one of the biggest changes is the no-kill policy.

“What is the most different now is that we’re operating under a no-kill philosophy,” Fuller said. “We won’t have anything euthanized that is considered adoptable and we only use euthanasia if it is a medical necessity or if the animal is aggressive.”

Media reports list the renovation costs to be between $70,000 and $100,000.

A ribbon cutting ceremony, open house and animal meet-and-greet will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Fuller said he’s excited to serve the community.

The newly renovated facility will hold a re-opening event on June 21.

“We’re really looking forward to the future and making sure that we provide the appropriate services to the animals and the community,” he added.

Adoption fees will be half-off during the event.
