Salt Lake City Bans Fireworks And Open Fires Until Further Notice

Personal fireworks and open fireworks will not be allowed within Salt Lake City limits until further notice, Mayor Erin Mendenhall announced Tuesday. The ban prohibits class C fireworks, which includes those commonly sold at firework stands such as smoke bombs and sparklers. City officials deemed the ban necessary to protect life and property.

Salt Lake City Fire Chief Karl Liab says fires are inevitable with no rain and triple-digit temperatures. He says summer is just beginning and city fire crews have already responded to 14 working fires in the past eight days.

Lieb says since it's difficult to enforce a citywide ban, they’re expecting people “to be responsible and use common sense.” Violators of the ban could be charged with a Class B misdemeanor, which carries a fine of up to $1,000.
