Free Tour - Fort Douglas Building 55

Free Tour - Fort Douglas Building 55

Join Preservation Utah and the Utah State Historic Preservation Office for a guided tour of Fort Douglas’s past. The building is maintained as it would have been 100+ years ago, and with the knowledge of our tour guides, you will experience Utah’s early military life as you never have before.

This modest adobe building has just passed its 160th year. The United States Army constructed it in the summer of 1863 as Camp Douglas slowly took form on the benches overlooking Salt Lake City. Now preserved as a living time capsule of early life at Camp (and later Fort) Douglas, Building 55 (aka Building 655 or the Post Commander’s House) plays an important role in interpreting a unique piece of Utah history amidst the modern University of Utah Campus.
