Students and staff gathered around the new Life Science Building on Tuesday and signed their names on the last steel beam. It's located on Utah State University campus behind the Merrill-Cazier Library and next to the Biology and Natural Resources building.
Maura Hagan, College of Science dean, says the event marked a milestone for the new building, which is expected to be completed in November, 2018 and the college hopes to start holding classes in January, 2019.
“It will revolutionize the experiences for out students who take foundational biology class," Hagan said. "These students that we will serve with this new building are majors from across the university.”
The building will hold 13 teaching labs, 11 research labs and a 300-person lecture hall.
“It’s really very exciting addition to the life sciences capabilities and their delivery at Utah State," she said.
The building cost about $45 million. $38 million came from the state legislature, and the college is currently raising private funds for the other $7 million.
In addition to the new Life Sciences building, the college is also hoping to renovate the Biology and Natural Resources building, a $25 million project. They’re hoping to receive $22 million from the state legislature and are in the process of raising $3 million from private funds.
