Google is buying land in Eagle Mountain for a possible data center, city officials say. The newly purchased land is right across the street from a data center for Facebook.Eagle Mountain Mayor Tom Westmoreland says he is excited about the idea of Google having a data center in the city. He says having some Fortune 100 companies “really elevates'' the city. Eagle Mountain economic development director Aaron Sanborn says the project could potentially bring in hundreds of new jobs and a significant amount of tax dollars that could be used for affordable housing.
There have been some questions on whether or not Eagle Mountain has enough water to support the new data center, since these centers tend to use large amounts of water to cool the equipment inside. Westmoreland says he isn’t concerned about it because the city “has those water allocations ready to go.”
Google says it’s committed to using water wisely and working on replenishing more water than it consumes at its data centers.
