I-80 to close for part of the weekend

Utah officials warn of heavy traffic as part of I-80 will be closed starting Saturday night. The east and west bound lanes will be closed from 700 east to Foothill Drive. The Utah Department of Transportation said the east and west bound lanes are expected to open back up again Sunday morning at 11 a.m. All lanes will open again by Monday morning at 6 a.m.

The closure comes as UDOT will begin work on the project of replacing the 1700 East bridge. UDOT plans to put into place the beams for the new bridge on Saturday night. The project will then move to constructing the new bridge next to the old one. The old bridge will be demolished, and the new bridge will slide into its place.

The project should be all done in the spring. UDOT said the new bridge will feature walking and bike lanes, making it safer for pedestrians.
