According to a report from FOX 13, sixty-two percent of Utah is being classified as “exceptionally dry,” which is the highest category of drought used by meteorologists today.Records show 2020 and 2021 contain the top 29 driest weeks on record for this century. The 30th driest week was in July of 2003, with only 33% of the state being classified as exceptionally dry. These dry conditions put the state at higher risk for wildfires than at any point this century, and likely much of the previous century.
Despite Utah’s conditions, there are five states who are at higher risk for wildfires including New Mexico, California, Colorado, Idaho and Montana.
