A SWAT team was called to the Northern Utah community of Newton Sunday afternoon during a standoff with sheriff's deputies.

The Cache County Sheriff’s Office says deputies arrived at the home around 4 p.m. after receiving information that a woman there was being held against her will.

Officials set up command at a nearby church after learning a 25-year-old white male had several firearms and had fired a handgun in the house.

Negotiators were able to make contact with the victim. Sheriff’s officials say she ultimately “was able to escape through a window and run to waiting officers.”

The man surrendered to SWAT operators without incident two hours later. The sheriff’s office say he is detained and is currently being interviewed by detectives.
