Utah Senate President Wayne Niederhauser says he's not running for re-election this year.

He said in a statement Wednesday that he recently decided not to seek re-election because he thinks it's time for "a new face with fresh energy and ideas."

When Logan City Mayor Holly Daines first learned about House Bill 462 for homeless services she began researching how an annual tax for low-income or homeless programs would impact her city.

“We are watching that bill,” Daines said.

Republican Representative Steve Eliason is sponsoring the bill that would give the state the ability to tax cities that don’t have programs for their homeless population.

The Utah Senate received over 300 submissions from high school students for its annual Utah Senate Visual Art Contest. 28 students were recognized on the senate floor on February 5. The winning student won a $5000 scholarship toward their college fund, and the rest of the winners won other various scholarships.

Republican Mitt Romney is trying for a political comeback as he launches a Senate campaign in Utah.The former presidential nominee confirmed his widely anticipated plans Friday in an online video. The announcement features his leadership of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and says the conservative state and its residents can show Washington how to govern respectfully.

Former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney is running for the Senate in Utah.

Three people with direct knowledge of the plan say Romney will formally launch his campaign in a video on Thursday. His first public appearance as a Senate candidate is scheduled for Friday in Utah. The people who provided the information asked for anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about Romney's plans in advance.

Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is talking business with members of Utah's burgeoning tech industry but making no announcements about his political future amid rampant speculation about a possible Senate run.

Romney emphasized the importance of character as he talked high finance and entrepreneurship Friday to an enthusiastic crowd at a conference in Salt Lake City dubbed Silicon Slopes, the nickname for Utah's cluster of tech companies. It was his second appearance this week as he ratchets up his public profile in his adopted home state.

The Republican presidential nominee in 2012, Mitt Romney, was treated for prostate cancer last year.

That's according to a Romney aide who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the aide was not authorized to discuss a sensitive health issue publicly.

The aide said Monday that Romney was diagnosed with "slow-growing prostate cancer" last year. The cancer was removed surgically and found not to have spread beyond the prostate, the aide said.
