The 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment is this week and events are planned throughout Logan to recognize some of the women who played trailblazing roles in the efforts to expand voting rights.
“These voting rights anniversaries really remind us of the long difficult struggle that people have engaged in order to have their rights to vote recognized and be able to vote,” said Joyce Kinkead, the co-chair of Utah State University’s Year of the Woman Initiative.
Kinkead has also been working with the Cache Celebration of Women’s Suffrage 2020 committee. The upcoming local event, “The Celebration of a Century” will be held on National Women’s Equality Day, Aug. 26, which marks 100 years since the 19th Amendment went into effect. It is part of a larger statewide initiative called Better Days 2020.
“So it’s just a great reminder to have this in our faces that these are not only our rights but our responsibility to get to the ballot box,” Kinkead said.
The celebration will be on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. on the steps of the Cache County Courthouse. Festivities will include live music by local group Wildflower, speakers, and a voter registration table.
Several other events are planned despite COVID-19 related setbacks, including a virtual Voting Rights symposium beginning September 17th. Banners celebrating women's history are displayed near Old Main and on Main street in Logan.
