New Utah License Plate To Honor Martin Luther King Jr.

A new license plate featuring artwork by a Utah student in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. will be available to drivers in the state this summer.

The legislation for the plate was sponsored by Senator Luz Escamilla during the legislative session last year. 18-year-old Eleanor Smith, a senior at Timpview High School, created the winning design for the plate, which features a yellow drawing of the state of Utah surrounded by hand of different colors, representing people of different racial backgrounds. The motto for the plate is “Many voices, one Utah.”

According to reporting from The Salt Lake Tribune, efforts to create a license plate honoring King in the state have been in the works since 2012.
