As the first day of school approaches, many county health departments still aren’t sure if they’ll be issuing a mask order for schools. Even if masking is recommended by a health director, the order would need to be approved by the county’s governing body. Summit County’s health department says it’s working with the county council to understand limitations and legal authority before considering any kind of mask order.
Utah County’s health department says it supports layered prevention strategies, such as getting vaccinated and wearing masks indoors. The department says it also wants to emphasize personal choice and responsibility.
Estee Hunt of the Bear River Health District says the conversation is still ongoing between the health department and the county’s governing body, but there’s still no timeline on when a decision could be made.
